This detrimental effect of the school system is not the result of a conscious desire to stifle the creativity of either students or teachers.&nbsp; But it is the very structure of academic institutions and certain myths that permeate them which ultimately nip any hint of creativity in the bud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"le-mythe-de-la-bonne-reponse-toxique-pour-la-creativite\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color:#000080\">The myth of the \u2018right answer\u2019 is toxic to creativity<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of those myths that stifles creativity in both children and teachers is that of the \u2018&nbsp;<em>right answer<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As if every problem had a single, valid, sound and verifiable answer.&nbsp; This myth of the single correct answer is not unrelated to a certain thirst for the absolute, for a single, revealed truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also reflects a deep-seated and equally misleading structure of our thinking: binary thinking. For if there is only one correct answer, that means all the others are false, mistaken \u2013 in a word: wrong. This leads straight into Manichaeism, where everything is either true or false, black or white, 1 or 0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also believe that, beyond the realm of knowledge, this myth fuels populism with its tendency to offer simple, one-off solutions to complex and multifaceted problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"pourquoi-cette-bonne-reponse-unique-tue-t-elle-la-creativite\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color:#000080\">Why does this single \u2018correct\u2019 answer stifle creativity?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the single correct answer, there is only one mode of thinking at work: the analytical, logical mode of thinking. A particular action automatically leads to a particular result. If the result of my calculation matches that of the teacher, I have the \u2018\u00a0<em>right answer<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb (in Belgium, one would say \u00ab\u00a0<em>I have good, sir!<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a bit like an electrical circuit \u2013 and that was also the principle behind the <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2bA0iK9\">l&rsquo;Electro<\/a>, remember: when you found the only correct answer, the electrical connection was made and the light came on. &nbsp;This concept of a correct answer fits well with the technology behind how the Electro works: there can indeed be only one response contact for each question contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout every <em><strong>creative exercise<\/strong><\/em>, on the other hand, &nbsp;there is <em><strong>two types of thinking at work<\/strong><\/em>, which follow one another and complement each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"la-pensee-divergente-et-la-pensee-convergente\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Divergent thinking and convergent thinking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"la-pensee-divergente-c-est-la-quantite-d-idees-qui-importe\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Divergent thinking: it\u2019s the QUANTITY of ideas that matters<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a brainstorming session, what matters is gathering as many ideas as possible. &nbsp;We don\u2019t care about their quality. &nbsp;What we want is to get as many as possible. &nbsp;Because, as Nobel laureate Linus Pauling said, quoted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com.be\/-\/en\/Change-Design-Transforms-Organizations-Innovation\/dp\/0062856626\/ref=asc_df_0062856626?mcid=685f5d21dec73ed7b97cf8d50f67d636&amp;tag=begogshpadde-21&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=712560382020&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=11430425355055126467&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=9196351&amp;hvtargid=pla-636533867213&amp;psc=1&amp;language=en_GB&amp;gad_source=1\">Change you need to have lots of ideas<\/em>\" .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything is therefore in place to avoid cognitive filters: value judgements, inhibitions, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The model corresponding to this stage is<strong> net fishing<\/strong> : we try to catch as many fish as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure Select the best answers.\" class=\"wp-image-56014\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/format30.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Pensee-convergente-selectionner-les-meilleures-reponses.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/format30.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Pensee-convergente-selectionner-les-meilleures-reponses.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/format30.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Pensee-convergente-selectionner-les-meilleures-reponses.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/format30.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Pensee-convergente-selectionner-les-meilleures-reponses.jpg?resize=18%2C10&amp;ssl=1 18w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/format30.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Pensee-convergente-selectionner-les-meilleures-reponses.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Convergent thinking: select the best answers from those gathered previously.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette deuxi\u00e8me phase apportera elle aussi sont lots de bonnes id\u00e9es, de bonnes r\u00e9ponses \u00e0 une question ou \u00e0 un probl\u00e8me. \u00a0Et l\u2019on choisira la \u00ab\u00a0<em><strong>best answer<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\"to this problem, to this question. &nbsp;And not the \"\u00a0<em>right answer<\/em>\" .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \"\u00a0<em>right answer<\/em>\u201cIn most cases, this is a response of the type \u2018\u00a0<em>incremental<\/em>\u00a0\": We improve on what already exists, but we don't create anything new.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the very purpose of creativity and innovation is to <em><strong>develop original, innovative solutions to an ever-increasing number of complex problems<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"l-habitude-de-la-bonne-reponse-nourrit-notre-avarice-cognitive\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color:#000080\">The habit of always having the right answer feeds our \u2018cognitive greed\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \" <em>right answer<\/em>&nbsp;\u201calso reinforces a character trait that stifles curiosity and inventiveness, namely that of \u2018\u201d&nbsp;<em>cognitive greed<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his book <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2aYThEQ\">La d\u00e9mocratie des cr\u00e9dules<\/a>, G\u00e9rald Bronner describes the satisfaction of having found a \u201c\u00a0<em>right answer <\/em>\u00a0\u2019 which spares us the trouble of looking any further. \u00a0As soon as we\u2019ve found what we consider to be a \u2018right answer\u2019, our curiosity is satisfied. \u00a0We no longer feel the need to invest any more time and energy in a response that might be more complex but also more innovative and rewarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dans un monde domin\u00e9 par\u00a0la complexit\u00e9, noy\u00e9 sous le flux incessant de l\u2019information en multicanal, il est peut-\u00eatre temps de pr\u00e9parer les humains \u00e0 construire leur propre savoir. \u00a0Non pas en anonnant des r\u00e9ponses toutes faites, mais en s\u2019entra\u00eenant \u00e0 consid\u00e9rer de multiples solutions alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"pour-des-pedagogies-de-la-creativite\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color:#000080\">Towards creative pedagogies<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, there are situations where there is only one correct answer: 2 + 3 will always equal 5. &nbsp;But this kind of mathematical or logical answer has little to do with our world, which is made up of complex human relationships, conflicting or even opposing systems of thought or belief, and systemic, globalised problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is there a single right way to manage traffic everywhere? Is there a good solution for caring for patients in healthcare facilities? Is there one and only one way to approach language teaching?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or is there finally room for a more open approach to teaching? &nbsp;For an educational approach that is more open to the creativity of both pupils and teachers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initiatives are emerging to bridge the gap between schools and businesses. &nbsp;Training young people in creative thinking and complex problem-solving, <a href=\"https:\/\/format30.com\/en\/2026\/02\/19\/la-pensee-design-en-formation\/\">at Design Thinking<\/a>\u2026 seeking innovative solutions would be a more sustainable and effective approach\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center is-style-info wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><\/strong><strong>Did you enjoy this article?
