Here's an effective 4-stage method: analysis, development, implementation and evaluation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:justify;\">Free course for teachers<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\"><strong>For teachers confined to their classrooms due to the pandemic, I offer a free online course. <a style=\"color:#ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/format30.com\/en\/2020\/03\/25\/comment-concevoir-un-cours-en-ligne-cours-gratuit-pour-les-enseignants\/\">All the information in this article: click here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Many companies are still reluctant to create an online course or blended learning (<a title=\"On-site learning, e-learning, blended learning: a few explanations about learning methods\" href=\"http:\/\/format30.com\/en\/2010\/11\/24\/on-site-learning-e-learning-blended-learning-quelques-explications-sur-les-modalites-dapprentissage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blended learning<\/a> which combines face-to-face lessons with distance learning).  How do you go about it?  What steps need to be taken?  And, above all, how do you hold learners' attention, given the high drop-out rate for this type of learning?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">I myself am confronted with this problem as a trainer and training designer, but also as a participant in a number of training programmes. <a title=\"Learning on the Internet with MOOcs, an excellent introduction \" href=\"http:\/\/www.onisep.fr\/Toute-l-actualite-nationale\/Etudes-apres-le-bac\/Actus-2013\/Decembre-2013\/Apprendre-sur-Internet-avec-les-Moocs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MOOCs <\/a>(Massive Online Open Courses).  So I'm always looking for tools and methods to improve the quality of my courses, make them more attractive to students and therefore reduce the drop-out rate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">And in the course of my research, I've come across some interesting findings that I'd like to share with you.  Whether in terms of the design of the courses themselves or the methods for making distance learning more user-friendly and attractive, more \"\u00a0<em><strong>user friendly<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\"The English expression says it all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Today, I'd like to offer you a<em> a four-stage method for designing distance learning courses<\/em>.  I didn't invent anything, it's a method suggested by <a title=\"Debbie Morrison&#039;s blog - how to design an excellent online course\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinelearninginsights.wordpress.com\/2013\/12\/09\/how-to-design-an-excellent-online-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Debbie Morrison on her blog Online Learning Insights<\/a>.  But I find it sufficiently interesting and well structured.  It is, in fact, the formalisation of many of our empirical efforts as training designers.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000080;\">The \"\u00a0<em>Course design<\/em>\u00a0\"inspired by\u00a0<em>educational design<\/em>\"\u00a0<br \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Debbie Morrison was inspired by a book by <a title=\"Klaus Krippendorf talks about design on Vimeo\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/43316950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Klaus Krippendorf<\/a>about design, its philosophical origins and its relationship with language.  I really like this concept, which Debbie Morrison calls \"\u00a0<em><strong>race design<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\" : \"\u00a0<em><strong>Course design or conception<\/strong><\/em>\" .   The \"\u00a0<em><strong>race design<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\"is inspired by<em><strong>instructional design<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\"which can be translated as\u00a0<em><strong>educational design<\/strong><\/em>\" .  The <em>educational design<\/em> already has a long life behind it since, if we are to believe this <a title=\"Wikipedia article on instructional design\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Instructional_design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia article<\/a>The first attempts date back to the Second World War and officer training.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The \"\u00a0<em><strong>race design<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\"is a concept of training that focuses not on teaching methods, but on learning methods.  On how students learn, not on how teachers or trainers teach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">It's not a question of playing with words, but of changing our point of view.  And this change of perspective also leads to changes in teaching practices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The courses are learner-centred, not teacher-centred. This helps you to set the course objectives.  And, above all, to ensure that they meet the identified need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Next, <em>analyse the target audience<\/em> :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what is its<strong><em> background<\/em><\/strong> - Is he still a student, or is he a professional looking to improve his skills?  There's a big difference!<\/li>\n<li>what are its <em><strong>motivations<\/strong> <\/em>?  Improve your skills?  Obtain certification?<\/li>\n<li>what is its <em><strong>level of skills<\/strong><\/em> ?  Is he a beginner or an expert?<\/li>\n<li>what is its <em><strong>Internet access<\/strong> <\/em>?  Broadband or an antiquated telephone connection?  Do they learn via a desktop PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you know who your audience is, set about defining your <em><strong>teaching approach<\/strong><\/em> :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>more of a connectivist?<\/li>\n<li>constructivist?<\/li>\n<li>rather instructivist?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Define the <em><strong>learning objectives<\/strong><\/em> for each <em><strong>teaching sequence<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Analyse the <em><strong>ways of distributing your content<\/strong><\/em> Is it synchronous or asynchronous?  Only online or blended learning?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">What are the <em><strong>Internet tools<\/strong><\/em> that best meet your needs and those of your learners?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Finally, determine your <em><strong>content sources<\/strong><\/em> according to your <em><strong>learning objectives<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000080;\">Second stage: developing your course<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Now is the time to develop a <em><strong>learning strategy!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Mix learning content: that which you develop yourself, that which you adapt from previous courses, that which you borrow from other courses, or even that which your students produce.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">This is also the time to set up your <em><strong>valuation methods<\/strong><\/em> quizzes, peer reviews, forums, etc.  Identify the <em><strong>success criteria<\/strong><\/em> for each type of method.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Create and describe <em><strong>activities<\/strong> <\/em>to encourage your learners to <em><strong>use the new concepts<\/strong><\/em> and\/or <em><strong>skills<\/strong> <\/em>acquired during your training: practical work, projects, group work, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Also identify <em><strong>criteria and methods for evaluating your course<\/strong> <\/em>The aim is for participants to be able to help you improve it by providing interesting feedback.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000080;\">Third stage: implementing your e-learning course<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">To check that everything is working and that your methodology meets the needs of your audience, launch a <em><strong>pilot course<\/strong><\/em> for a small group of learners from your audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Carry out a <em><strong>formative evaluation<\/strong><\/em> What did the people who took the first test in your training course really learn?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">On the basis of this <em><strong>feedback<\/strong><\/em>If you have any questions, revise your course: adapt some of the content, delete some of the others (don't worry! they may be reused for other modules).  And add some things that might be missing...<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Carry out formative and summative evaluations with your pilot group.  Draw conclusions from these by moving on to step 4:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000080;\">Fourth stage: evaluation and updating<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Gather the feedback you have received from various sources, both qualitative and quantitative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Analyse this feedback.  Also take into account factors external to your course.  All it takes is for you to have scheduled the launch of your course at a time when people are taking their holidays to significantly reduce participation rates...<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><em><strong>Compare your results<\/strong><\/em> with those of comparable educational institutions: analyse their quantitative and qualitative measures.  What do the results tell you?  Are you average?  Above average?  Below average?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">And if necessary, <em><strong>review your analysis phases<\/strong> <\/em>(you may have missed something) and\/or <em><strong>development<\/strong><\/em> (The teaching progression may need to be reviewed: I changed the language method I was using with my students in Maastricht.  And I changed to one that better respects the expected progression of my students.  Results: less discouragement, more pleasure, more positive results...).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Then start the whole process, bearing in mind that everything can be improved at any time...<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">As you will have realised, this is not some miraculous method, but the implementation of a <em><strong>structured methodology<\/strong><\/em>.
