European Raw Materials Week: illustration from the film Europe's Lithium Paradox

European Raw Materials Week: the lithium paradox - Formation 3.0

European Raw Materials Week: Sim2 at the University of Leuven presents its film Europe’s Lithium Paradox. While the European Union wants to promote the fight against climate change and a cleaner industry, it is still torn between a rock and a hard place.

As part of our European offer, we are naturally interested in topics that affect the EU directly or indirectly. Europe has remarkable ambitions in terms of environmentally friendly industry and the fight against climate change. However, behind the Green Deal and other New European Bauhaus, the political direction is far from clear.

The example of lithium is characteristic of this vacillation between the desire for independence and subjection to Chinese and American interests, between ambitions for reindustrialisation and unbalanced trade negotiations with partners who show little respect.

The exemplary case of lithium

During European Raw Materials Week – from 17 to 21 November 2025 – Sim2 presented at the Aventure cinema from Brussels, the film Europe’s Lithium Paradox, presented by Dr Peter Tom Jones, an expert in these matters.

The film was followed by a debate bringing together, in addition to Dr Jones, a panel of specialists from both industry and environmental NGOs.

The film is now available for free on YouTube and the Journeyman website. So you can form your own opinion on these matters – no pun intended.
