What are the advantages of Open Educational Resources?
However, these RELs have definite advantages.
- You save time because you only need to create part of your educational content.
- You save on production costs, as these resources are generally free.
- You will be part of a vast network of creators, giving you more opportunities to forge professional relationships and even interesting partnerships.
- You help the environment because you use much less energy by getting free educational resources than by creating them.
- You make it possible an open education, or education accessible to as many people as possible.
Open educational resources are slow to catch on in French-speaking countries
While Anglo-Saxon countries have long embraced the culture of open educational resources, it has been slow to take hold in French-speaking countries.
I need look no further than this double graph, which shows that our English-speaking colleagues are at least twenty years ahead of us.
I created this double graph using Ngram Viewer, a search engine specialising in publishing, to illustrate the emergence of the term ‘open educational resources’ in English and French publications.
The Anglo-Saxons started talking about it twenty years before we did.
Formation 3.0 asbl and open educational resources
For our association, RELs are a constant concern. It is even a mission priorities that we have set ourselves.
This is also one of the reasons why, for all MOOC set up by our team and partners, we always ensure that the associated educational resources are freely accessible.
