Creating dialogues with AI: Dupdub

How to create dialogues with AI for foreign language comprehension, for example. We tried Dupdub. The result is rather interesting.

3–5 minutes

Like all language teachers, we are constantly on the lookout for dialogues to train our learners' listening comprehension skills.

Creating dialogues with AI: effortless customisation

We have to prepare a self-assessment in English for a group of Italian teachers. We have decided to test different skills:

  • Listening comprehension
  • Reading comprehension
  • Le niveau d’expression orale
  • The level of written expression

For reading comprehension, we used the artificial intelligence built into our platform. The Course networking.

However, for oral comprehension, we wanted an original dialogue, with different voices. I thought I'd record our voice and that of Valeria, our new Italian intern. But then I realised that I'd left my microphone at home.

So we looked for an artificial intelligence solution. I first thought of D-ID AI Avatars, the Canva for Education application that we used to the escape game with the Spanish teachers.

But while this solution is ideal for creating an avatar with a recorded or synthetic voice, it cannot be used to create dialogues between two people with different voices.

On Canva, we found Dupdub. An application with a strange name (American slang for ‘dubbing the dubbing’) but which offers the possibility of creating dialogues with the AI from a text.

Synthetic image and voice

But the icing on the cake is that Dupdub doesn't just create two voices: it also offers characters, in duet or solo.

We fell in love with a young couple for a Valentine's Day chat. They're right next to each other, with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

We wrote the dialogue. It took us a few minutes. The first part for Anna, then Tom. And so on.

And a few minutes later, we had a video of two young people talking about losing luggage at the airport.

Although the bodies are static (like in TV cartoons when the characters talk, to keep the cost of animation down), the faces are expressive and the lip-synching and sound are quite impressive. Given the theme of the dialogue, we chose an ‘angry’ tone, and it's very successful.
